Basic Beading - The Gift of Courage

Throughout history beads have had many uses. From paper weights to calculators, currency to status and even magic talismans, basic beading has fascinated habitancy for over 43,000 years. It is this usefulness, value and power that makes beading a great way for children to article their journey with serious illness.

Jean Baruch a pediatric oncology nurse wanted to find a way for the children she cared for to express their feelings about their illness and track their progress. She found inspiration while working at one of Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Summer Camps for children coping with cancer and their families. Jean noticed how all the campers loved basic beading and showing off their creations. Seeing the joy that beads can bring she created Beads of Courage in 2004.

The agenda provides children with stringing material and colored beads that laid out milestones, procedures and acts of bravery. A yellow bead is given for an overnight hospital stay, a white one for chemotherapy and a glow-in-the dark one for radiation rehabilitation giving the children a way to not only article their advance but also find drive to face anything comes their way because they may have already been through it before. It is not uncommon for a child to have in any place from 10 to even 40 feet of beads or more, and be able to share the importance of each one.

According to the Beads of Courage website, beadsofcourage.org, the non-profit currently supports over 10,000 children in 60 hospitals placed in four distinct countries, with funding solely from hidden donations. But they are not the only ones using basic beading to enhance lives. In Uganda beads are bringing hope to women and their families as a means to raise themselves out of poverty.

Two groups Beads of Hope Africa and settlement of Hope were started by two distinct American women after Seeing the poverty and destruction of war in Uganda. Both Michelle Boice and Cindy Cunningham found a way for local women to sustain themselves from their homes rather than breaking rocks and originate money for children to get an education.

The Ugandan women originate beautiful beads from rolling triangles of colored paper colse to a thin metal dowel and glue the end. The beads are then dipped up to three times in a varnish to seal them. Once dry they are slid onto strings to make bracelets, necklaces and earrings. The jewelry is then sold online to the industrialized world with profits going directly to the women who make them, their families and the orphaned children's schooling.

Who knew that something as simple as basic beading could be so powerful? The art of uniting string and beads, antique and contemporary at once has put a smile on millions of faces, given, hope, courage and drive to those who need it most and made the wide world a much smaller space. Maybe the best beading hidden is the immeasurable joy that comes from creating, sharing, and holding something that will no doubt fascinate us for someone else 50,000 years
